’The Orphanage’ arrives on Blu-ray with the same special features found on its regular DVD counterpart. However, compared to other hefty New Line Blu-ray releases, this one is fairly light on content and merely presents its features in standard definition.
* When Laura Grew Up: Constructing the Orphanage (SD, 18 minutes) -- This subtitled behind-the-scenes featurette genuinely digs into the details of the production, the shoot, and the final film. Gracefully exploring the script, story, casting, cinematography, and performances, it’s presentation is both candid and concise. It includes interviews with the cast and crew, comments from the producers, and thoughts from Guillermo Del Toro himself (whose name is plastered on the front cover). To be honest, I find that I enjoy shorter featurettes like this one much more than those that draw out every imaginable detail ad nauseam.
* Tomas’ Secret Room: The Filmmakers (SD, 10 minutes) -- Divided into five chapters, this extension of the behind-the-scenes material explores the director and his crew, the film’s musical score, its art direction, special effects, and the creation of its unique title sequence. Each chapter continues along the path paved by the bulkier making-of featurette and is definitely worth watching.
* Horror in the Unknown: The Make-Up Effects (SD, 9 minutes) -- This self-explanatory mini-doc takes a look at the process behind the prosthetics application and make-up effects used in the film. While it wasn’t as revealing as the rest of the behind-the-scenes material, it offers a few interesting tidbits that justify its existence.
* Rehearsal Studio: Cast Auditions and Table Read (SD, 3 minutes) -- It may be short, but this by far one of my favorite bonuses included on the disc. I had a great time watching Bayona conduct a read-through rehearsal with his cast and it was interesting to see his interactions with each actor. I do wish it was more extensive, but I enjoyed every second.
* Marketing Campaign (SD, 6 minutes) -- This section includes a collection of Spanish and English trailers, as well as a variety of theatrical poster designs.
* Still Gallery (HD) -- Nearly 200 photographs are spread across six sections that run the gamut of the production. It includes photos of the cast, sets, locations, black and white images, production stills, and conceptual art.
Lo que más me molestaría es que el AR viniera como el DVD (también de Quality), recortado a 1.78:1.
