International soccer star David Beckham is negotiating to make a cameo in the remake, which features Steve Martin as bumbling French Inspector Clouseau — the role originated by Peter Sellers in the “Pink Panther” films directed by Blake Edwards.

Beckham would play a soccer player in the film, which follows a detective solving the murder of a famous soccer coach and the theft of the Pink Panther diamond.

Whether the English midfielder can take the role hinges on whether the shooting schedule would present any conflicts with his regular job, MGM spokesman Eric Cops said Friday.

“We want him to do it and he wants to do it, and as long as the filming dates and his working dates work themselves out, it will happen,” Cops said.

The cameo would be the first feature film appearance for Beckham, who was shown in archive footage in Gurinder Chadha’s film “Bend It Like Beckham.”

“The Pink Panther,” scheduled to start production in May, will also star Kevin Kline, Beyonce Knowles and Jean Reno. It's scheduled for a July 2005 release.

Beckham, who plays for Real Madrid, is one of soccer’s best known players. His fame has spread far beyond soccer, in part due to his changing hairstyle and marriage to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham.

Nexus to Provide New 3D Pink Panther Makeover

April 14, 2004

VFXWorld has confirmed that the Pink Panther will be sporting a brand new 3D animated look for the main title sequence of the upcoming live-action PINK PANTHER feature starring Steve Martin as Inspector Clouseau. London-based Nexus Prods. (which produced the highly touted CATCH ME IF YOU CAN main titles) will be doing the animation honors.

In a recent interview with AWN, David DePatie, co-creator and co-copyright owner of the animated Pink Panther character, expressed concern about early CGI tests, suggesting that they made the Panther "look too round and kind of chubby."

Owned and operated since 1997 by producers Chris O'Reilly and Charlotte Bavasso, Nexus Prods. Ltd. (http://www.nexusanimation.com) makes award-winning animation for TV, commercials and music videos. U2's POP MART world tour was an early success.
